Aggregometer Measures Platelet Function

A new aggregometer has been developed that improves detection of abnormal platelet function by using electrical impedence in whole blood or optical density in plasma, while simultaneously measuring adenosine triphosphate (ATP) release by the luminescence method.

The new aggregometer 700 is also capable of performing the Ristocetin cofactor assay for diagnosing patients with von Willebrands disease. It was developed by Chrono-log (Havertown, PA, USA) and is distributed by Labmedics (Manchester, UK). Providing accurate results with a fast turnaround time, the whole-blood/luminescence-aggregometer is both a reliable diagnostic tool and a comprehensive screening system. Included with the model 700 are software programs for the platelet aggregation and Ristocetin cofactor assays.

Four samples can be tested at one time with two dual channel modules. Offering an integrated computer interface, the aggregometer has single push-button controls and can be used with disposable or reusable impedance electrodes. The system has luminescence on all channels. The measurement of aggregation together with a secretion study simplifies, speeds, and reduces the cost of platelet function testing. Labmedics offers a range of highly concentrated Chrono-par reagents so that only micro amounts are needed for assays.

The system helps to identify patients at high risk of thrombosis or bleeding, select patients for anti-platelet therapy, as well as monitor treatment.
