The 2015 Health Industry Summit (tHIS; Shanghai, China) opened to huge crowds on May 15, with over 210,000 visitors from 150 countries in attendance.

The tHIS exposition and congress is the newest umbrella global pharmaceutical and medical industry event, bringing together CMEF, PharmChina, and API China in one place and at the same time, thus completing the entire value chain for the Chinese health industry in one mega event. China’s top pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors welcomed tens of thousands of domestic and international buyers, with fast-growing market segments (such as natural health and nutritional products) doubling in size, while the China International Component Manufacturing& Design (ICMD) show demonstrated an unprecedented 300% growth in exhibitor participation.

Held at the new National Convention & Exhibition Center (Shanghai, China), the exhibition occupied a total area of 290,000 square meters and showcased the latest cutting edge medical equipment and equipment manufacturing solutions, pharmaceutical formulations and ingredients, manufacturing technologies, and natural health and nutrition products offered by 6,800 suppliers and manufacturers from 30 countries. Healthcare equipment giants such as GE, Siemens, Philips, Mindray, and United Imaging had specially designed stands that served as a backdrop for the launch of the hundreds of new to market products.

In addition to the exposition, more than 100 conference sessions were held, enabling leading academics and professionals from around the world to meet and share innovation and thinking on policies and investment, research and development, manufacturing and distribution, education and hospital applications, and related services for the industry. The 2015 tHIS exposition and conference were organized by Reed Sinopharm (Beijing, China), a joint venture of Reed Exhibitions and China's state-owned pharmaceutical group Sinopharm.

According to a state-issued strategic whitepaper in 2013, China expects the total market size of its health sector to triple to a massive USD 1.2 trillion by 2020. According to the paper, this growth potential is partly attributable to China’s aging population, which is expected to account for more than 30% of the total population by 2050.
