Cardiogram Management System Monitor Patients' ECG via Wi-Fi

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 31 Aug 2010

An all-in-one electronic cardiogram management (ECM) system allows doctors to monitor patients' electrocardiogram (ECG) data remotely, and in real time, using wireless networks.

The Beijing Goodwill ECM system addresses the need for advanced healthcare information technology systems to help improve the management of ECG processes. Using the system, physicians can review ECG tests and diagnoses by tapping into a centralized databank of ECG information available to them from any location. Doctors can also use their mobile devices, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) or smartphones to access patient information, including actual ECG images. The physicians can also access information garnered from Holter systems, treadmill stress machines, and patient monitors.

The heart of the ECM system is the IBM (Armonk, NY, USA) DB2 database and analytics software, which runs on the IBM System X server. The DB2 relational database software was optimized by IBM to allow the System X to handle patients' ECG data, and is compliant with eXtensible Markup Language (XML) standards--the data format used in almost all other ECG systems--and is compliant with international medical standards. As a result of this high-level of integration, the system helps doctors and hospitals to diagnose more effectively, eliminate human errors, reduce cost, increase revenues, optimize resources, and enhance research and educational capabilities. The Beijing Goodwill ECM system is a product of Beijing Goodwill Information and Technology (China).

"Together with IBM, our company is leveraging technology to address the number one disease in China and worldwide,” said Xia Jun, president of Beijing Goodwill. "The new ECM system will benefit all physicians and patients by helping to improve the management and care of cardiovascular diseases.”

To address the rising demand for information technology-enabled healthcare solutions in China, IBM has opened a healthcare industry solutions lab in Beijing (China), where IBM experts work with medical service providers to develop healthcare and medical systems. IBM has also embarked on a global initiative to draw its expertise in system and information integration, services research, cloud computing, analytics, and other emerging scientific areas to help physicians develop patient-centered healthcare systems.
