A fourth generation toe restoration system provides a less traumatic alternative to fusion procedures, allowing patients to preserve their mobility.

The ToeMotion Total Toe Restoration System is indicated for Stage IV Hallux Ridgidus, degenerative arthritis, and stiffness due to bone spurs that affects the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint at the base of the big toe. The system restores mobility and maintains native biomechanics by combining the modular phalangeal implant (with a threaded baseplate) with an existing dual curved HemiCAP DF metatarsal implant, thus creating a stable fixation using constructs on both sides of the joint. A tapered screw and taper interlock provide rock-solid fixation, while the dual implant curvatures and super smooth surfaces provide improved dorsal roll-off.

The HemiCAP DF implants allow only the damaged part of the joint to be restored without limiting motion or removing significant amounts of bone and tissue. The implants are designed to match not only the diameter of the damaged area, but also the precise radius of both curvatures on the joint surface. Once mapping points are defined, the appropriate implant is chosen; different diameters and curvatures are available to provide an individual fit. The ToeMotion Total Toe Restoration System and the HemiCAP DF implants are products of Arthrosurface (Franklin, MA, USA).

“I have known for quite some time that the screw based fixation of the HemiCAP system is superior to any of the other press-fit solutions currently on the market,” said Carl Hasselman, MD, who implanted the first ToeMotion system in the United States. “The instant fixation, immediate weight-bearing and early motion is critical to the excellent outcomes my patients have experienced with the Arthrosurface system over the past decade.”

“We expect the ToeMotion total toe system to be a game changer for those patients with arthritis of the 1st MTP joint,” said Steve Ek, CEO of Arthrosurface. “Due to the prior success of the HemiCAP DF as well as the HemiCAP knee and shoulder systems, it became obvious that adding a phalangeal component to accompany the DF would be successful in the market. Proven fixation with implants that restore motion is a great new option.”
