A novel film envelope creates a barrier from contaminants on smart devices and electronics, making them usable in a sterile environment.

The eShield line of sterile covers for handheld electronics feature an optically clear polyethylene film that is touch-screen compatible with surgical gloves, allowing digital devices (such as cellphones, tablets, and cameras) to be used while maintaining surgical asepsis. During invasive procedures, surgeons can thus enjoy immediate access to diagnostic imagery, medical history, lab results, and other medical information at the point of care (POC) in hospitals, surgery centers, dental clinics, podiatry clinics, and other healthcare settings.

Using the eShield covers, operating room staff can communicate and document electronically right in the sterile field, eliminating the need to re-glove. The eShield sterile covers are a product of Whitney Medical Solutions (Niles, IL, USA), and have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Various sizes of the eShield covers are available, including ones that can handle large single lens reflex (SLR) cameras, allowing high quality documentation by the surgical staff itself without calling in an outside photographer.

“Technology has become ubiquitous in all aspects of professional life including the medical field. We developed the eShield to address the growing need for digital devices in the sterile field of surgical suites,” said Steve Whitney, President of Whitney Medical Solutions. “eShield’s real solution for this real problem gives surgeons direct control of these devices from the surgical table.”

The eShield is an envelope design with quick seals for closure. Special tabs clearly mark if it has been sealed properly or not.
