Innovative hemostatic gauze dissolves on site to manage bleeding from a variety of external wounds and traumatic injuries, as well as lacerations and abrasions.

WoundClot is a single-use, sterile, and bio-absorbable gauze made of non-oxidized cotton cellulose, which can be fabricated into a variety of forms and sizes. When exposed to water, blood, or exudates, the molecular structure changes to form a gelatinous membrane which adheres to the wound, thus creating a mechanical barrier which reduces blood flow immediately. Platelets from the natural clotting mechanism then attach via intermolecular forces to form a stable film that can withstand severe arterial and venous blood flow for hours.

Subsequently, specific molecular functional groups created during the manufacturing process and dispersed within the gel activate various coagulation factors in the blood, helping to form a natural biological fibrin clot in the wound. The stable yet flexible gel complex can retain its structural integrity for an extended period of time, which can be removed easily using water or saline. WoundClot is a product of Core Scientific Creations (CSC; Shave Zion, Israel), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“It comes in a long ribbon. When it is exposed to liquids, this product starts to absorb enormous amount of blood and then it transforms into a gel state,” said Shani Eliyahu-Gross, PhD, vice president and chief technological officer (CTO) of CSC. “The bandage not only stops otherwise unmanageable bleeding within minutes, it does it without the need to apply pressure, usually critical after certain wounds to areas like the neck or head; the more blood absorbed, the quicker the clotting process.”
