An innovative double-gloving system enables faster and easier donning, as well as facilitating glove breach detection.

The Ansell (Iselin, NJ, USA) GAMMEX PI Glove-in-Glove system is composed of two gloves, one inside the other. The outer glove is the GAMMEX PI Hybrid, which is made of a blend of two synthetic materials, polyisoprene and neoprene; the underglove is the extremely thin GAMMEX non-latex PI glove. The combination of the two provides for quick and easy glove breach detection, as the semi-transparent natural-colored outer glove contrasts with the green inner glove.

Benefits include a faster donning time than the current two-step process, as the inner glove is one-half size bigger than the outer glove for optimal user comfort; a lower environmental impact, as the two pre-donned gloves means 50% less inner wrap packaging waste; easy removal of the outer glove, which makes it easier to accommodate intraoperative changes; and advanced allergy protection, since the non-latex glove eliminates the risk of Type I latex allergy and minimize chemical Type IV allergies and skin sensitivities.

“Ansell is known globally for its innovation; it’s in our DNA. Faithful to over 50 years of GAMMEX heritage, we are proud to introduce the world’s first pre-donned, double-gloving system providing the ultimate protection for healthcare workers, in half the time, while reducing the environmental impact,” said Joe Kubicek, president of the healthcare global business unit at Ansell. “Through customer feedback we developed this new offering with innovations that will make donning gloves easier and safer in the OR.”

Current surgical practices may result in more than a 50% incidence of blood exposure per operation when healthcare workers do not take any added precautions. Double gloving during surgical procedures provides an additional level of protection against blood-borne infections and greatly reduces the risk of glove penetration and cutaneous exposures. Double gloving has an added benefit of reducing the risk of surgical cross-infection.
