Handheld ECG Offers At-Home Cardiac Monitoring

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 08 Feb 2012

An innovative electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor can be used by the patients themselves to record heart rhythms and upload them for review by physicians.

The HeartCheck Pen Handheld ECG Pen is an easy to use heart rhythm-monitoring device with a large, high-resolution liquid crystal display (LCD) screen that displays accurate heart rate and ECG waveform in just 30 seconds. Up to 20 ECGs can be stored on the device, which can then be printed or downloaded to a computer via proprietary Global ECG Management System (GEMS) home software, which offers a simple user interface for managing heart rhythm recordings and associated data. The GEMS software also enables the recorded heart rhythm data to be uploaded to a call service telemedicine group for review by a physician.

Until the data is monitored remotely by a physician, clinic, or the C4 ECG coordinating centre, the Pen will display only the heart rate count. Once a C4 physician has provided review and feedback to the customer, the HeartCheck Pen screen can be unlocked to display real-time ECG and heart rate count for subsequent heart rhythm recordings. Repeated recordings can then be managed in a personal health data record. The HeartCheck Handheld ECG Pen and the GEMS Home software are products of CardioComm Solutions (Toronto, Canada), and have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“We feel the HeartCheck Pen is a true remote monitoring device because it is compact, easy to use, and takes accurate heart readings in only 30 seconds,” said Etienne Grima, CEO of CardioComm Solutions. “The Pen may be used from anywhere, including at home, the office, the gym, or in remote areas which are often inaccessible to common ECG machines.”
