A comprehensive range of anesthesia and respiratory care systems address the special requirements of working in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suites.

At the heart of the Penlon anesthesia product range for the MRI suite is the Prima 451, a compact anesthesia system designed specifically for use inside an MRI scanner of up to 1.5 Tesla. The system features the AV-S MRI electronic ventilator with integrated oxygen monitoring and spirometry, with advanced spontaneous support modes, positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) monitoring, hospital information system (HIS) connectivity, and system integration.

Other products include the Nuffield 200, a pneumatically driven time-cycled ventilator with preset volume and flow rate for adult or pediatric patients, which is available with the optional Newton Valve to deliver ultra-low tidal volumes (as low as 0.5 L/min) for neonates and premature babies. Multiuse capabilities include a coaxial circuit, an Ayre’s Tee circuit, a circle system, resuscitation and pediatric bellows kit, and an MRI version of the Sigma Delta vaporizer with multiple agent and filler system options.

For intubation, the Penlon Diamond MRI laryngoscope range offers four blade styles, each with multi-size options, including neonate. Breathing circuits, an anesthetic gas scavenging receiver, a gaussmeter, a suction kit, and a direct probe oxygen therapy flow meter completes the product range. All products are manufactured by Penlon (Abingdon, United Kingdom) and are provided with worldwide technical support, custom service training packages, and service options tailored to suit individual customer requirements.

“The Penlon MRI Product Range is an exciting milestone for Penlon and represents the first phase of our product development program for the MRI environment,” said Peter Worrallo, sales and marketing director at Penlon. “We believe that a single source ensures peace of mind and value for money when equipping the MRI suite. Future product releases will feature enhanced anesthesia systems and specialist products for patient care.”

Many patients require general anesthesia or sedation for MRI because of the need to minimize movement during potentially long scanning times, and the noisy and claustrophobic environment of the scanner. Anesthesia should be induced in a dedicated anesthetic room so that patients can be easily and rapidly transferred into the scanner and rapidly retrieved in an emergency. Patients should be transferred into the scanning room on an MRI-safe nonferrous trolley and a mask with no ferromagnetic components must be chosen.
