Sectra Medical Systems (Linköping, Sweden) has entered a new multi-year contract with Karolinska University Hospital (KUH; Stockholm, Sweden) to provide radiology IT services.

The medical imaging information technology (IT) provider will assume total responsibility for technology, administration, and service of the hospital's radiology IT systems, which is claimed to be first of its kind in Sweden. Under the terms of the contract, which are valued at over USD 25 million, the hospital will be provided with a fully managed service for the effective handling of their radiology information system (RIS) and picture archiving and communication system (PACS).

KUH is one of Europe’s largest university clinics, and will inaugurate Scandinavia’s largest hospital, the New Karolinska Solna (NKS), in the winter of 2016. Sectra has supplied medical IT systems to KUH for more than 15 years, and the new service will replace, among other things, the earlier system that Sectra supplied, and for which it has a service agreement with KUH. The service will also include new and expanded RIS functions, such as dose monitoring, statistics tools, and advanced volume visualization.

“Close and long-term partnerships with demanding and highly productive customers such as Karolinska University Hospital are the reason for our radiology IT systems receiving top marks from our customers throughout the world,” said Ann-Sofi Mikaelsson, president of Sectra Medical Systems. “Being entrusted by Karolinska to supply these critical operational services demonstrates that Sectra is a reliable partner, and that our solutions are stable and offer the functionality and performance required for providing high-quality and safe patient care.”

“For Karolinska University Hospital, long-term partnership is important for achieving an efficient and purpose-designed service,” said Lars Johanson, RIS/PACS project owner, and Johan Henriksson, assistant senior consultant and section head of the KUH Solna Radiology Clinic. “Accordingly, this was a linchpin in the procurement process that preceded the agreement we have now signed with Sectra. The partnership requires that the service has the possibility to be continuously developed.”
