A new state-of-the-art hospital complex will provide public healthcare services for residents of Baghdad (Iraq), and will employ both Iraqi and German doctors.

The new Ibn Hayyan hospital will occupy a total area of 58,700 m², and will be situated close to the banks of the expansive River Tigris in the center of the Iraqi capital. The three-building complex includes a hospital consisting of approximately 363 beds and two more buildings, the first serving as the staff building, and the other as a serviced apartment building. There are also plans in place to have a university college situated within the grounds, where the next generation of Iraqi doctors can obtain valuable practice and experience. The hospital is scheduled to open in late 2015.

The state-of-the-art facility is a project of General Mediterranean Holding (GMH; Luxembourg), a multinational organization founded by Iraqi-born British entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir Nadhmi Auchi. GMH’s activities range from construction and real estate, banking and finance, to hotel and leisure, broadcasting and communications, IT, pharmaceuticals and aviation. The project was designed by Mebex Consultants (Beirut, Lebanon), which has been involved in several major healthcare projects in Iraq, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia.

The new hospital is named after Abu Musa Jabir Ibn Hayyan, a renowned Muslim scholar of the golden age. He was a polymath, chemist and alchemist, astronomer and astrologer, engineer, geographer, philosopher, physicist, pharmacist, and physician. Best known for his contributions to chemistry, his achievements include the invention of separation techniques, including crystallization, distillation, and the synthesis of various acids, that are still used today. He is also credited with the invention of over twenty types of chemical lab equipment.
