New Hospital Planned for Limmat Valley

The Spital Limmattal (Schlieren, Switzerland) hospital group will build a new hospital in the Swiss Limmat Valley.

The new hospital will include an eight-story building with 50,000 m² of floor space that will accommodate 200 beds, each with its own bathroom. Among the facilities planned are five operating theatres, an accident and emergency department with a 12 bed capacity, and a maternity unit. Technical facilities will include a car park situated on two basement levels, a restaurant, administrative offices, laboratories, and X-ray facilities. Modern electrical and ventilation systems will be designed to minimize the risk of infection.

Built at an investment of EUR 175 million, the hospital will serve the residents of Schlieren, a town that is part of the Zurich metropolitan area. The hospital will be built next to the existing Spital Limmattal hospital, which is over 40 years old. Both the buildings and the infrastructure (ventilation, water, gas, and power systems) of the existing hospital are outdated, and no longer meet the needs and requirements of the 10,500 inpatients and 59,000 outpatients that attend the hospital yearly.

Losinger Marazzi (Köniz, Switzerland) , a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction (Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France), will design and build the new hospital, which is the first in Switzerland to be developed with the use of building information modeling (BIM), a process that involves the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics, which can then be exchanged or networked to support design decisions. The company will begin the fitting out phase of the project in the third quarter of 2016, and the facility is expected to become operational in 2018.

“This contract illustrates our development in the healthcare sector in Switzerland, where investments of some EUR 20 billion are expected over the next 15 years,” said Pascal Minault, CEO of Bouygues Entreprises France-Europe. “Losinger Marazzi is benefiting from the expertise of the Bouygues Construction Group, which has completed dozens of hospital projects in recent years in France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other countries.”
