Two new operating room (OR) booms offer a range of features for the needs of cost-conscious interventional radiology (IR) applications.

The NuBOOM U-Series M2u and M4u booms are designed to provide an alternative, lower cost approach for construction of IR operating rooms where high definition visualization and radiation exposure protection are standards of care. While traditional IR OR involves heavy, bulky X-ray equipment mounted to the floor or from a ceiling gantry, the NuBOOM can be installed over a weekend, supporting up to 3 booms for suspending displays, radiation shields, and surgical luminaires, thus eliminating ceiling construction and not impacting floor loading.

The system includes a cabinet populated with electrical outlets to improve safety by removing cords from the floor, with an enclosed cable pathway to conceal the cords to quicken terminal cleaning; an integrated shelf system of up to six shelves that rotate away from the sterile field; and long adjustable arms for dual flat displays with six image source inputs (DVI-D, HD-SDI, VGA, SOG 1, SOG 2, S-VIDEO). A light emitting diode (LED) procedure light and a transparent radiation shield can also be suspended from the booms.

The displays can be positioned for sitting, short, or tall surgeons, and provide a comfortable 15° downwards viewing angle, A touchscreen control system enables access to fluoro, ultrasound, vitals, electronic medical records (EMR), minimally invasive surgery (MIS) cameras, a picture archiving and communication system (PACS), among other inputs. The inherent flexibility of the modular approach also complements the use of a mobile C-Arm, as well as enabling the OR to be utilized for other surgical specialties. The NuBOOM U-Series M2u and M4u booms are products of CompView Medical (CVM; Beaverton, OR, USA).

“Installing a NuBOOM is a much simpler and time efficient undertaking than traditional demolition and renovation projects. It allows a hospital to avoid a lot of disruption and sunk cost, making it easier to expand IR services to their stakeholders,” said Paul White, President of CompView Medical. “Delivering a NuBOOM configured for IR is gratifying because we have seen increasing demand this past year from the hospital community.”

An added benefit is that the system can be installed in just two days, minimizing disruption to OR schedules and staff and avoiding costly renovation and installation downtime. And because it is a constructed structure, rather than being built-in into the ceiling infrastructure, it can be relocated as space needs change or if the property leasehold expires.
