Combined Wound Healing Approach Pairs Synthetic Scaffold With Negative Pressure Therapy

Managing complex wounds requires both structural support for tissue repair and a controlled environment that protects the healing process. More...

Frequent dressing changes can disrupt the wound bed and add complexity to care. A newly FDA-cleared combined use now pairs a synthetic electrospun fiber matrix with negative pressure wound therapy in a single treatment pathway designed to support active healing.

Solventum’s Restrata Synthetic Electrospun Fiber Matrix and Solventum V.A.C. Therapy have received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for concomitant use. The clearance enables clinicians to deploy both technologies as an integrated approach to active wound healing. The regulatory milestone follows Solventum’s acquisition of Acera Surgical in December 2025.

Restrata Matrix is a 100% synthetic, fully resorbable scaffold engineered to support soft tissue healing. Rather than relying on growth factors, the matrix provides structural cues that support cellular infiltration, neovascularization, and organized collagen deposition. It is designed to perform in challenging wound environments and resist enzymatic degradation, gradually breaking down through hydrolysis as native tissue forms.

Solventum’s V.A.C. Therapy provides negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to create an environment that supports wound healing. When used with dressings such as the V.A.C. Peel and Place Dressing, the system helps maintain close contact between the matrix and wound bed. NPWT macrostrain draws wound edges together, while microstrain promotes cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and granulation tissue formation. The therapy also supports perfusion, reduces edema, and removes fluid and infectious material for up to seven days per application.

When used together, Restrata Matrix provides structural support while V.A.C. Therapy helps optimize the wound environment and promote tissue integration. The matrix’s fully synthetic design aligns with the Peel and Place Dressing’s wear time of up to seven days, whereas some collagen-based dressings may degrade earlier and be less suited for combined use. The approach may reduce dressing changes, limit disruption of the wound environment, and provide a more predictable workflow for care teams. Restrata Matrix is indicated for use with the Solventum V.A.C. Ulta Therapy Unit, V.A.C. Peel and Place Dressing and Kit, and V.A.C. Granufoam Dressing and Kit.

“Complex wounds require clinicians to support tissue repair while also maintaining the right healing environment. This indication brings those needs together in a single approach, giving clinicians another option to support healing more effectively across the course of care,” said Matthew MacEwan, Ph.D., chief science officer and co-founder of Acera Surgical.
