Finger-Based Identification for Critical Data Security

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 02 Aug 2004
Advanced finger identification technology is designed to ensure that only medically relevant, nonpublic patient information is disclosed to authorized parties.

The new identification system, called Web-key, will allow thousands of healthcare professionals at hundreds of secure locations to access confidential patient records with a simple finger scan. More...
The system is based on True User Identification technology developed by Bio-key International, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN, USA).

The system will fill new U.S. requirements that healthcare providers create a privacy-conscious environment in which only medically relevant, nonpublic patient information is disclosed to authorized parties. Bio-key has recently been awarded a contract to provide secure data access for a major healthcare system using the advanced finger technology. Web-Key was integrated into the hospitals' existing portal system in a matter of days, according to the company.

"In addition to providing the level of security to meet federal requirements, the Bio-key solution satisfied another critical requirement: eliminating the need to issue and manage user IDs (identifications), passwords, or cumbersome authentication tokens,” explained Mike DePasquale, CEO of Bio-key. "This is one of those ideal situations where security has been significantly increased, the user experience is improved, and product support costs are reduced.”
