Pressure Control Mode for Anesthesia System

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 18 Dec 2001
A pressure control mode for delivery of anesthesia allows doctors to control patient ventilation by pressure instead of volume when needed. More...
The enhancement is designed for the Ultraview anesthesia delivery system (ADS) of Spacelabs Medical (Redmond, WA, USA).

With the new pressure control mode, doctors can choose from three operating modes: manual, with which the patient can be ventilated manually with a bag or breathe spontaneously; volume, with ventilation controlled by volume; or pressure control, with ventilation controlled by pressure. The pressure control mode is available for both pediatric patients and adult patients. It permits pediatric patients with cuffless endotrachial tubes to be sedated safely, without danger of stress injuries from the procedure. Doctors may also find the pressure control mode beneficial for some adults undergoing head or neck surgery.

"The pressure control mode will give our customers more flexibility without complicating the process,” said Roy Hays, vice president of product development for Spacelabs. "The ability to select modes allows a broader population of patients with certain health conditions to be sedated safely and easily.”
