New Incubator for Intensely Ill Infants

A new incubator is designed to provide a healing environment for infants requiring intensive care and to simplify the work of caregivers. More...

Called the Giraffe Incubator, the care station offers babies who are intensely ill a microenvironment providing better control of ambient light, sound, touch, humidity, and oxygen as well as the thermal support needed for proper growth and development. The incubator was developed by Ohmeda Medical (Laurel, MD, USA).
The company says it interviewed hundreds of clinicians and parents while designing the new incubator and other products in the Giraffe line. A rotating mattress facilitates positioning of the baby for procedures with minimal stimulation. The large clear hood is intended to provide better visibility of the baby from any angle, and the bed platform can be lowered so family members can have extended interaction with their baby. Caregivers have unobstructed access to the baby through two large doors.

"Every feature of the Giraffe Incubator has been designed to help clinicians provide the highest level of care to their patients,” said Daniel Strauch, senior product manager at Ohmeda Medical. "It will certainly make life a little easier for the caregivers and their tiny babies.”
