Breathing Circuit Filter Captures Pathogens

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 21 Mar 2002
A new breathing circuit filter, for use in ventilators and other breathing circuits, captures and isolates infectious pathogens by removing moisture and particulate from airflow at high levels of efficiency.

Called the 2HBCF, the sterilized, disposable filter is based on 2H technology developed by Emergency Filtration Products, Inc. More...
(EFP, Las Vegas, NE, USA). This technology utilizes a combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic filter media. The filter has numerous applications in hospital emergency departments in ventilators, respirators, and anesthesia circuits. The device has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

EFP says the filter medica create efficiencies of greater than 99.99% at a particle size of 0.027 microns, according to independent laboratory tests. This technology is in use in a variety of medical devices currently on the market, including the Vapor Isolation Valve and RespAide, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation mask used for resuscitation of respiratory/cardiac arrest patients.
