New Tools for Quantifying Fluorescence

New luminometers provide high-throughput accurate quantification of fluorescence with 384-well plates, a format that allows for smaller sample size. More...


Options include shaking, temperature control, and integrated software packages, making the instrument truly automated and hands-free. The Junior LB 9509, a product of Berthold Technologies (Wildbad, Germany), is a lightweight portable luminometer designed for all bioluminescent and chemiluminescent applications. It is suitable for laboratory and outdoor use in research, diagnostics, and food and environmental monitoring.

Turner Biosystems' (Sunnyvale, CA, USA) TBS-380 fluorometer accurately quantifies nucleic acids, which is crucial to assay development and experimental design. The assay can be quickly and efficiently repeated, thereby increasing lab productivity.

The LD 400C Luminescence Detector produced by Beckman Coulter (Fullerton, CA, USA) is PC-controlled and has a range of eight decades that can detect very small amounts of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The system allows flash and glow applications as well as photometric absorbance detection (450–650 nm). Other features include dual injections and programmable linear shaking. Windows-based software enables data and protocol control as well as refined analyses.

The Luminoscan Ascent features 1-384 well plates and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) plates. It includes an incubator and dispensers that support simultaneous reagent injection and signal detection. A product of Thermo Electron (Waltham, MA, USA), the Luminoscan is ideal for glow and flash luminometric assays.

BMG Labtech's (Offenburg, Germany) Lumistar Optima is a microplate luminometer that is fully upgradeable to all fluorescence modes. It offers top and bottom reading, incubation, shaking, and the ability to control two on-board injections.

LMax II384 and LMaxII are microplate luminometers from Molecular Devices (Sunnyvale, CA, USA). The LMax II384 is designed for both flash injections and glow applications in both 96- and 384-well microplates and the LMaxII for glow applications in 96-well microplates. Ultra-fast photon counting technology provides a superior signal-to-noise ratio. SoftMax Pro software manages instrument control, data collection reduction, and analysis. Applications include assays for ATP, dsDNA (double stranded DNA) and luminescence-based enzyme-linked immunosorbant assays (ELISAs).
