Handheld Spectrometer Enables Field Analysis

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 05 Apr 2006
A handheld, near infrared digital transform spectrometer analyzer enables chemical analysis in the field at low cost.

The Phazir spectrometer was launched by Polychromix (Wilmington, MA, USA), a developer of innovative material analysis, chemical sensing, and spectroscopy solutions. More...
Combining a digital transform spectrometer (DTS) engine, its light source, reference probe, rechargeable batteries, integrated computer, and liquid crystal display (LCD) into one unit, the Phazir can be used remotely, such as in field applications. The DTS family is powered by telecommunication microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology.

The DTS devices are currently targeted at general purpose spectroscopy applications. The Phazir is fully integrated with software that can be configured to specific applications. As a fully programmable solution, both can be configured to operate in various scanning modes. This flexibility enables the user to configure the device optimally to a broad set of applications. Polychromix also offers services to allow for specific chemometric model development for individual applications.

"With the introduction of the Phazir, we are revolutionizing the traditional methods of NIR chemical analysis. No longer will scientists and technicians be forced to endure the time-consuming and cumbersome process of taking in-field sample measurements, transporting them to a laboratory, and then waiting for analysis results,” said Mouli Ramani, vice president of marketing and business management at Polychromix. He added that the Phazir will revolutionize methods and processes that vary from incoming inspections to end-customer purity analysis, offering an affordable, easy-to-use product.
