Developed by Inverness Medical (Waltham, MA, USA), a manufacturer of rapid immunodiagnostic devices, Clearview Exact Influenza A & B is an immunochromatographic membrane assay that uses sandwich immunoassay technology. It consists of a dipstick device containing a membrane strip that has separate regions with immobilized influenza A and B specific monoclonal antibodies, and a gold conjugate that also consists of specific influenza A and B antibodies.

The assay has been scientifically engineered so that it can be performed and interpreted by non-laboratory personnel. Administration time is minimal and appropriate anti-viral agents can be identified. This reduces the amount of referrals to hospitals, and helps to prevent the superfluous use of antimicrobials. By differentiating between infections caused by Type A viruses from those caused by Type B viruses, Clearview Exact A & B will help to contain potential epidemics and maximize the targeted use of antiviral agents. Patients who do not have influenza will be spared the side effects and costs of antiviral treatment.
