Design Award for Point-of-Care System

Posted on 09 Jun 2006
The Afinion point-of-care analyzer was selected as a winner in the U.S. More...
2006 Medical Design Excellence Awards competition.

The analyzer enables on-the-spot testing, regardless of the sample type. Key features include multiple analytes on one instrument, an all-in-one reagent cartridge, integrated error detection system that prevents erroneous results, and short assay times. The system comprises an instrument specially designed to measure various chemistries and a very wide range of tests. A unique failsafe system supervises and logs every step during processing and measurement. This ensures that a result will never be displayed if an error occurs during sample handling or measurement. The Afinion analyzer was developed by Aix-Shield (Oslo, Norway).

The award recognizes scientists and engineers who are responsible for groundbreaking innovations that are changing the face of healthcare. A comprehensive review of all entries was performed by an impartial, multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, human factors, industrial design, medicine, and diagnostics.

"We are very pleased that our Afinion system has been recognized in this way and that our significant investment in this ground-breaking platform to improve diagnosis at the point of care has achieved this U.S. accolade,” said Svein Lien, CEO of Axis-Shield. "We believe customers and patients will appreciate the elegance and accuracy of Afinion and its ability to deliver quick test results using a very simple procedure.”
