Blood-Glucose Monitor Uses Biosensor Technology

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 29 Aug 2006
A blood-glucose monitoring device quantitatively measures the glucose in fresh capillary whole blood and will help monitor the effectiveness of diabetes control. More...
The device can be used by professional medical staff or for self-testing by people with diabetes.

The new Assure pro blood-glucose monitoring system developed by Hypoguard (Minneapolis, MN, USA) is designed to meet the growing demands of the long-term care (LTC) profession. LTC refers to the assistance extended to patients in terms of their physical and emotional needs over the long term. Features of the new device include the qcProguard, Progrip design, backlighting, and strip release.

The test strip is inserted in the port at the top of the meter. A small sample of blood (1µl) is applied and plasma-referenced results appear in just 10 seconds. With a strip release button for disposal, there is no need to touch a used strip, reducing the risk of exposure to infectious materials. The test strip is built on biosensor technology. When the blood to be tested is applied to the sample application tip, blood glucose reacts with an enzyme on the test strip. The reaction produces a current proportional to the blood glucose level, which the meter detects and converts into the proportional blood glucose reading. Assure pro provides a hypo warning to alert staff of low blood glucose readings and four individual alarms that can be programmed as test reminders.

The qcProguard is a 24-hour optional control solution reminder to alert the user to perform a control-solution test. This feature will help protect users from inaccurate readings and ensure quality control (QC) compliance. Platinum is built into every Assure pro strip ensuring greater durability, reliability and accuracy. Double dosing allows a second application of blood, reducing strip waste. The adjustable liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight allows results to be read in lowlight conditions.
