Portable 3D Visualization Developed for Mobile Clinical Assistant

FiatLux Imaging, Inc. (Redmond, WA, USA) and Philips FIMI (Best, The Netherlands), a global provider of medical displays and mobile point-of-care terminals, announced the benefits of 3D imaging at the point-of-care using FiatLux Visualize on the Philips CliniScape mobile clinical assistant (MCA). It marks the first use of the innovative diagnostic imaging software on the advanced handheld MCA. Developed by Philips in cooperation with the Intel Digital Health Group (Santa Clara, CA, USA), the MCA meets the growing demand for clinical data access at the patient bedside and throughout the hospital.

"I'm very impressed by the simplicity of this software for viewing clinical images in 3D on a simple tablet PC [personal computer]. In our tests, FiatLux Visualize demonstrated complete reliability and displayed high-quality, detailed 3D images quickly and easily,” commented Eric van 't Hoff, business development manager for Philips FIMI. "FiatLux Visualize was developed in response to a demand from physicians for a portable, user-friendly, compact system for immediate 3D and related image visualization.”

"Medical specialists utilizing medical images are realizing the benefits of using a solution like this for image analysis, confident diagnoses, and improved patient communication and understanding.”

FiatLux Visualize utilizes data from MRI and CT exams to create detailed 3D representations of the human anatomy. Unique in the industry, the system exploits technology used in video games to create 2D/3D images from computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans at a portion of the cost of current medical imaging technology. The FiatLux Visualize received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510k clearance in August of 2008.

FiatLux Imaging is developing next-generation medical imaging software solutions including 3D advanced visualization and analysis for MRI and CT for use by neurosurgeons, cardiologists, orthopedists, and other image dependent providers, along with radiology departments and facilities.
