Clinical Review Displays Support Hospital-Wide Imaging Needs

A new imaging display has been developed to answer the growing demand for visualizing DICOM- [Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine]-compliant images and patient information beyond the radiology department.

The MDRC display, developed by medical imaging specialist Barco (Kortrijk, Belgium), will provide a valuable yet cost-effective visualization solution for a wide spectrum of applications throughout hospitals, imaging centers, and private practices.

"To deliver exceptional healthcare, quality patient images and patient information need to be available in all areas of the hospital, not only in radiology. More...
The new MDRC displays make this possible by delivering consistent, DICOM-compliant images at a very affordable price,” explains Johan Stockman, market director at Barco. "Thanks to their excellent image quality and rich feature set, the MDRC displays are very well-suited for visualizing PACS [picture archiving and communication systems], cardiac, orthopedic, dental, or pathology content, along with data from EMR [electronic medical record] , HIS [hospital information systems], or RIS [radiology information systems] applications.”

The MDRC series comes in two variants: a 20-inch color screen with two MegaPixel resolution (MDRC-2120) and a 19-inch color version with one MegaPixel resolution (MDRC-1119). The latter can optionally be fitted with a touch screen interface. Both models are equipped with professional-quality liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that present medical images with higher contrast and a wider viewing angle than conventional LCD screens. An integrated DICOM part 14 Look-Up Table (10-bit) provides accurate grayscales and worry-free ‘DICOM-out-of-the-box' imaging.

Consistent image quality is a prerequisite for dependable healthcare imaging, and was therefore high on the MDRC's priority list. To achieve this, Barco fitted the displays with its proven Backlight Output Stabilization (BLOS) technology, which permanently stabilizes the luminance of the LCD backlight, leading to long-term image consistency. Furthermore, the display line is bundled with the innovative MediCal QAWeb software for DICOM calibration and quality assurance.

The new clinical review displays have been specifically designed to keep capital investment and operating costs low. Therefore, the displays are built with high-quality components and equipped with a series of intelligent features. These include Backlight Output Stabilization and a power-saving mode, which automatically switches off the display when not being used.

Both the 19-inch MDRC-1119 and the 20-inch MDRC-2120 are immediately available for commercial distribution.

Barco, a global technology company, designs, and develops visualization products for a variety of selected professional markets.
