HD PET/CT Scanner Captures Images in 10 Minutes

Posted on 03 Sep 2009
A high-definition (HD) feature of a new positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scanner allows physicians to target the smallest lesions detectable on any scanner (those not typically found in current technologies) through its enhanced clarity, improved resolution, and better uniformity.

Long Beach PET Imaging Center (Long Beach, CA, USA), a leading diagnostic imaging center, has completed the installation of the new HD PET/CT scanner, the first of its kind in the area. More...
The Siemens Healthcare (Erlangen, Germany) Biograph 40 TruePoint PET/CT with HD and True-V technologies performs PET/CT scans in about 10 minutes, less than half of the time of conventional PET/CT studies, which can take from 25-40 minutes. The Siemens Biograph 40 TruePoint PET/CT is the only high-definition scanner available in the marketplace today.

"We are extremely excited to bring this new technology to Long Beach and the surrounding areas. The types of the scans that can be performed by the Siemens Biograph 40 will dramatically enhance the quality of imaging services the community will now be able to access. In fact, scans on patients are already being performed, and we are seeing very positive results and extremely rapid turnaround times,” explained Jeffrey Allen Dobkin, M.D., medical director, at Long Beach PET. "Most importantly, this scanner--because of its high-definition capability--allows us to detect the smallest of lesions. This early detection of cancer can certainly make a significant difference in one's life. This scanner will only enhance our capabilities within the radiology and imaging services arena.”

The Siemens Biograph 40 TruePoint PET/CT combines positron emission technology and computed tomography technology. The PET provides functional information at the molecular level while the CT offers anatomic data. Other features of the Siemens Biograph TruePoint PET/CT include a comfortable design; claustrophobia-defeating open gantry system; crystal technology; very high PET and CT resolution; high resolution at any pitch; and high standard rotational speed.
