Real-Time Data Platform Supports Precision Care in Polycystic Kidney Disease

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, the most common genetic kidney disorder, affects more than 7 million people worldwide. More...

Although hospitals generate extensive clinical data on these patients, the information often remains scattered across systems and is analyzed only for individual research projects. This fragmentation limits its broader use in research and patient counseling. To make routine care data more accessible and useful, researchers have developed a digital platform that consolidates polycystic kidney disease information for near-real-time analysis.

The platform, MEDA-PKD, stands for MEdical DAta translation service of Polycystic Kidney Disease. It was developed and tested by researchers from the CECAD Cluster of Excellence and the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne at the University of Cologne, University Hospital Cologne, Heinrich Heine University, and Düsseldorf University Hospital. The system links clinical follow-up data, laboratory results, imaging findings, medication information, quality-of-life data, and initial molecular data on new biomarkers.

MEDA-PKD automatically collates data from clinical practice and research and makes the information available almost in real time. The current work demonstrates its use for research purposes, with future application planned for individual patient care. The platform was described in npj Digital Medicine under the title “MEDA-PKD: A Dynamic, Real-Time Analytics Platform for Precision Care in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease.”

The researchers also showed that the approach can generate clinically relevant treatment insights. Using routine clinical practice data, they demonstrated that tolvaptan, the only medicine specifically authorized for polycystic kidney disease, slows the loss of kidney function. This finding shows that MEDA-PKD can support ongoing assessment of treatment efficacy under real-world conditions.

The platform has also been evaluated for patient counseling. In an initial study, seven experienced doctors rated MEDA-PKD as very user-friendly. The time needed to compile information for a consultation on tolvaptan therapy was reduced by approximately 72%, and patients can use the platform to review statistics and analyses themselves.

The same technical framework could be adapted to other chronic kidney diseases, heart failure, cystic fibrosis, or cancer. Its long-term goal is to support a learning health care system in which routine care data continuously generate new insights. This approach may help connect clinical care, research, and patient-facing information more directly.

“With MEDA-PKD, we have developed a tool based on patient registry data collected over many years, which is already helping us to advise our patients. This is the first practical example of an approach that could also be applied to other conditions in the future,” said Dr. Sita Arjune of University Hospital Cologne.
