Handheld Spirometer Cleared by FDA

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 19 Dec 2000
A pocket-sized, full-function handheld spirometer has been cleared by the U.S. More...
Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Its portability, says the developer, is especially attractive to mobile clinicians.
Called Sensaire, the spirometer offers a touch-screen LCD with alphanumeric data entry, including patient name and demographics usually found only in computer-based and large tabletop spirometers. The device can easily fit into a lab coat, weighs less than 13 ounces, and performs tests throughout the day with its replaceable, nickel-metal hydride rechargeable battery pack. It is the first device from QTS Diagnostic, LLC (Plymouth, MN, USA) to use the company's patented, biodegradable mouthpiece sensor.

"Either the devices are too big, too difficult to use, too costly, or require constant calibration and sterilization between patients,” said Joe Bieker, director of sales at QRS. "Sensaire has just one button---on/off.”
