MR Guidance System for Interventional Procedures

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 21 Dec 2000
A real-time guidance system for interventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures has been introduced. More...
The system helps clinicians to accurately maneuver interventional and surgical devices, using a real-time display of a needle's location and its future trajectory for both in-slice and out-of-slice approaches.

Called the MR Guide, the system features a respiratory gating device that enables a doctor to compensate for motion of the patient's anatomy during the respiratory cycle. The MR Guide is designed for a variety of application, from soft tissue and orthopedics to neurologic applications. Since neurologic procedures are usually performed in the operating room, doctors could now choose to perform them with real-time guidance in the MR suite.

Developed by UltraGuide, Inc. (Denver, CO, USA), the MR Guide was first used in November in the University Hospital in Munich (Germany), where a patient with recurrence from a pleuramesothelioma underwent laser ablation for palliation in a closed MRI scanner. "The MR Guide is a revolutionary breakthrough that will enable physicians to perform guided procedures in any MRI suite, including closed MRI systems, which represent the majority of the installed base,” said Oded Meirav, Ph.D., vice president of global marketing for UltraGuide.
