Software Provides Hospital-Wide 3D Imaging

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 11 Jan 2006
Three-dimensional (3D) software designed to provide fast enterprise-wide access to 3D medical imaging utilizes powerful server-based technology and high-performance ATI graphics processing units (GPUs), and accelerates the speed at which users can load, review, report, and communicate patient cases with clinical colleagues.

Whether the user is working on a high-performance diagnostic workstation or a standard personal computer (PC), the software provides large volumetric studies faster with updates of multi-planar reformatting (MPR) and 3D views. More...
The Voxar 3D Enterprise software is designed to take advantage of Voxar 3D's large number of existing picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) for a unified workflow.

Performance is optimized for users of high-performance diagnostic workstations in the radiology reading room. In this environment, users have access to Barco's optional clinical applications, VesselMetrix for vessel analysis and CardiaMetrix for computed tomography (CT) cardiac studies. When using conventional, off-the-shelf PCs throughput the enterprise, users can quickly load and review volumetric image studies with the most frequently used 3D visualization tools. Voxar 3D's site license program makes it an efficient and cost-effective system, providing sophisticated 3D functionality wherever needed.

The software's visualization performance has been helped by Barco's technology cooperation agreement with ATI Technologies, Inc. (Markham, Ontario, Canada). This agreement gives Barco the license to optimize ATI's accelerators for medical imaging applications.

"As 3D visualization becomes a routine part of the daily radiology practice, radiologists demand advanced 3D visualization analysis tools that provide the power and speed to improve productivity and reduce reading times. They want to able to review cases at their desired speed, not the speed dictated by the software,” stated Calum Cunningham, general manager of Barco's Voxar Product Group (Kortrijki, Belgium).
