Pulse Oximeter Wins Design Award

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 05 Apr 2001
A pulse oximeter has won a 2001 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA) in the critical care and emergency category in the MDEA competition sponsored by Canon Communications. More...

Called Radical, the pulse oximeter is actually two pulse oximeters in one: a stand-alone device for bedside monitoring and a detachable handheld pulse oximeter for portable monitoring. Interface options provide an upgrade path to a conventional hospital monitor. Radical, the product of Masimo Corp. (Irvine, CA, USA), incorporates a new version of the company's signal extraction technology (SET) as well as FastSat, which allows pulse oximeters to accurately track rapid saturation changes. Also included is Signal IQ, a visual indication that identifies the arterial pulse and quality of the acquired signal even under conditions of motion and low perfusion.

"Clinicians from around the world contributed to the design of Radical by challenging our engineers to take the Masimo SET engine and design a pulse oximeter body around it that would make it available to all of their patients in all of the environments they were using conventional pulse oximetry,” said Joe. E. Kiani, president and CEO of Masimo Corp.
