A pocket-sized spirometer used to measure lung capacity and performance in hospitals and doctors' offices now incorporates new software that makes it more efficient and easier to use.

A Blow and Go feature provides immediate information on a patient's status without the customary delays required to calibrate and enter patient information. More...
This feature aids quick transferral from the emergency department to a treatment room. To better meet the needs of the growing global healthcare market, the new software can provide information in Spanish, German, French, Italian, Dutch, and English. The spirometer also includes an improved patient-use flow sensor with a six-digit bar code that offers the option of scanning an entry or entering the numeric code manually.

Called the Simplicity, the spirometer is the product of Mallinckrodt Inc. (St. Louis, MO, USA). We have made these software enhancements in response to customer feedback and extensive market research results, said Peter Gonzalez, director of marketing in Mallinckrodt's Alternate Care Division. Gonzalez noted that the software upgrades are being offered to existing customers at no charge.
