C4-Enabled Digital Mammography Application Allows for Integrated Workflow

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 19 Sep 2007
A new mammography reading application provides an integration framework that facilitates plug-in integration of clinical applications with minimal changes to the host (e.g., picture archiving and communications system [PACS]) software).

I-ReadMammo can be plugged into all C4- (Cedara Clinical Control Center)- enabled systems. More...
The new plug-in application is designed for modular integration into any C4-enabled mammography imaging system. Cedara Software Corp., a Merge Healthcare company (Mississauga, Canada), and a medical imaging software and services provider, announced the introduction of a C4-enabled I-ReadMammo, creating a plug-in version of its successful digital mammography system.

Cedara also reported that several imaging equipment vendors already are integrating this new C4-enabled version of I-ReadMammo into their PACS systems. A C4-enabled host integrated with one or more C4-enabled clinical applications provides an integrated desktop environment with procedure-centric workflow. The C4 platform supports integration with imaging companies' PACS, radiology information systems (RIS), and electronic medical record (EMR) systems.

The term "C4 enabled” refers both to the C4 host--for example, a PACS workstation--and to the clinical application that runs on the host, such as a 3D angiography visualization tool or a planning package for orthopedic procedures. C4 provides a standard interface for all bi-directional information between the C4-enabled host and clinical application plug-in, creating a tightly integrated system that is designed to maximize productivity.

Cedara Software's I-ReadMammo application was specifically designed to address the entire breast imaging workflow. Both standalone and C4-enabled versions of I-ReadMammo are multi-modality, vendor-neutral digital mammography workstation systems, enabling healthcare organizations on a single workstation to display and read images from different vendors and different acquisition devices (digital mammography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging [MRI], computed radiography [CR]).

Another Cedara C4-enabled clinical application is Cedara OrthoWorks ProPlanner. Under development are C4-enabled positron emission tomography/CT (PET/CT) for advanced radiology procedures, and Cedara B-CAD (computer-assisted diagnosis), to assist in breast ultrasound analysis.
