Lab Reports Accessed Via a Centralized Web-Based Platform

A centralized platform has been designed to securely administer, transmit, and track laboratory results and reports. More...

The e-health system does not require general practitioners to download software, but can be accessed via a web-based platform. Facilities or practices running specific software systems can also make effective use of the system, as it integrates over 45 general practitioner (GP) software packages and 33 laboratory software solutions.

The e-Health Bioserveur is currently used by over 8,300 GPs. Agfa HealthCare (Mortsel, Belgium), a leading provider of information technology- (IT)-enabled clinical workflow and diagnostic imaging systems, reported that its Bioserveur e-Health solution was recently presented at the World of Health IT (WHIT), held in Vienna, Austria, from October 22-25, 2007.

In total, some 8,382 doctors across France and its overseas departments and 700 laboratories are actively using the system. Bioserveur, active since 1999, does not require general practitioners to download software, but can be accessed via a web-based platform. Facilities or practices running specific software systems can also make effective use of the system, as it integrates over 45 GP software packages and 33 laboratory software solutions.

Developed as a direct response to an increasing demand for a system that overarched all laboratory and GP software solutions, Bioserveur today manages over 250,000 patient files per month. All data are managed by a central communication infrastructure, which administers and communicates information to the relevant parties in the appropriate format.

Dr. Rémy Pillot, president of the Mediabio Commission in France's Rhône Alpes region, who actively makes use of the software, stated, "The Regional Commission, set up by the Association de Biologistes Libéraux [Association of Private Biology laboratories], selected Bioserveur for its ability to optimize the exchange of electronic medical data. The solution allows us to transfer information quickly, efficiently, and in its entirety, thus enabling us to offer our patients and clinicians rapid feedback and effective care.”

"Bioserveur is proof of point that e-Health today is a reality and that Agfa HealthCare can deliver solid solutions to meet the needs of its customers on this front,” stated Eric Maurincomme, Ph.D., vice president e-Health at Agfa HealthCare. "Bioserveur is the perfect example of how a healthcare IT leader can develop a solution that meets and integrates the needs of primary and specialized care providers, greatly simplifying the collaboration process required in modern healthcare.”

The flexibility of the Bioserveur platform allows its service to be extended to include discharge letters and radiology reports, making it a major contender for future e-Health systems.

"Integration is key,” said Dr. Maurincomme. "With just one repository, we know how to distribute, archive, and display lab reports. This platform makes this happen outside of the hospital, with the infrastructure and the tools to do it.”
