Integrated Cardiac Imaging System

A new catheterization laboratory system that combines angiography, fluoroscopy, and radiography with advanced information technology is designed to make cardiology departments more efficient.

The system, from Siemens Medical Solutions (Erlangen, Germany), uses the company's common software platform, called syngo, to communicate with other modalities, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and the hospital information system to provide doctors with all relevant information during and after a test. Because of good image quality, vascular structures distributed over dense areas, such as the spine, are just as visible as those located over the lungs. A built-in motion detector virtually eliminates excess image noise. Clinicians set the minimum radiation dose values for each test, and the system provides a graphical read-out of dose values as a percentage of the maximum allowable dosage.

Called the Artis FC, the system can be used for adult and pediatric cardiac procedures but can also be configured to support electrophysiology and non-cardiac vascular imaging. The system is part of Siemens' Axiom product line. "Artis represents a whole new direction for hospitals looking to transform the cath lab from a stand-alone facility into a more integral part of the cardiology department,” said Klaus Hambuchen, president of Siemens' angiography systems division.
