System for Diagnostic Image Delivery and Storage

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 25 Sep 2001
A system for the secure electronic delivery and storage of diagnostic images is designed to enable referring doctors and radiologists as well as patients to manage images and reports securely and for life, eliminating the risk of lost, damaged or destroyed images.

Images, whether from computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or another system, are encrypted and pushed electronically via the Internet to any computer running special software that the patient desires. More...
There, doctors and other health-care professionals, regardless of their location, can have immediate delivery and access to these patient images. The images are also sent to a lifetime storage center. In addition, the images can be saved on any other removable electronic storage media, such as CD-ROM, and given to the patient.

The system, called RadVault, is the product of RadVault, Inc. (Hayward, CA, USA). RadVault comprises an electronic Smart Delivery T and centralized Lifetime Storage T, Viewer workstation, and database software. Many medical centers and hospitals throw away or recycle traditional film images after five to seven. This means that they are not available to doctors or patients when they may be needed to track the course of a disease. RadVault says its system makes consultation with colleagues easier and promotes better patient care.

"Patients are assured that their doctors have instant access to superior, digital images that can be accurately evaluated for pathology and anatomy, and that can be transferred to other medical professionals anywhere with the click of a mouse,” said Peter Rothschild, M.D., founder of RadVault.
