Combined Glucose Monitor and Insulin Doser

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 21 Mar 2002
A new device that combines glucose monitoring and insulin delivery in one system is designed to improve blood glucose control. More...
The system has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The new system, called InDuo, offers less painful blood glucose testing by requiring such a tiny drop of blood that it allows patients to test on the arm, where there are fewer nerve endings. Results are available in only five seconds. The system remembers the amount of insulin injected at the last dosing as well as the time elapsed since that dosing, which helps to build user confidence. Patients will find it easy to dial the correct amount of insulin and inject the dosage required. The system is used with One Touch Ultra Test Strips from LifeScan (Milpitas, CA, USA) and PenFill insulin cartridges with insulin from Novo Nordisk (Copenhagen, Denmark) and is being marketed by both companies.

"Studies have shown that by testing and controlling blood glucose, people with diabetes can reduce their risk of eye, nerve, and kidney damage by up to 60%,” said Robert Coradini, president of LifeScan.
