FDA Clears Wireless Surgical Display

A personal image display and communications system for minimally invasive surgery has been cleared by the U.S. More...
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has also received ISO 9001 certification. Called OptiVu HDVD (high definition video display), the system places an apparent, full-color videoscopic image directly in the surgeon's line of sight.

The OptiVu system integrates high-performance, electro-optics, wireless communications and surgical ergonomics to improve visualization and provide audio capability for the videoscopic surgical team. OptiVu allows surgeons to look down in the same direction they are working, eliminating the need to turn away from the patient to view the image on a remote monitor.

The OptiVu system was developed by Optimize, Inc. (Los Gatos, CA, USA) and was introduced at the Annual Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons in Chicago (USA). "Since the video monitor is the surgeon's only view of the operating field, visualization continues to be a significant issue for surgeons performing minimally invasive procedures,” explained Eric Miller, president of Optimize.
