New Imaging Combo for Cancer Detection

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 15 Dec 2000
A new whole-body imaging system combines positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) technologies to help doctors identify, stage, and manage cancer.

Called Biograph, the new system offers the early detection benefits of a PET scan with the precise organ visualizations of a CT scan. More...
In one procedure, the system produces a unique image that records living tissues or life processes in great detail, mapping internal structural anatomy with the molecular or biologic function of internal structures and tissues.

Biography is the product of the nuclear medicine group of Siemens Medical Systems, Inc. (Erlangen, Germany). The company says the new system reduces test time, provides faster and more complete information, and allows for earlier detection and diagnosis. Siemens introduced the system at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago (IL, USA), where researchers from the University of Pittsburgh (PA, USA) and University Hospitals Cleveland (OH, USA) presented case studies documenting the benefits of Biograph for managing cancer patients.
