New Technology for Preserving Platelets and Organs

New technology under development for preserving platelets and organs may extend and maintain the functionality and quality of these materials for much longer than is currently possible and without the use of toxic solutions.

The technology, called the PlexLife System, was developed by HyperBaric Systems, Inc. More...
(Palo Alto, CA, USA). Preliminary tests have been conducted for platelets and animal kidneys. The company is now conducting specific tests on platelets and animal kidneys to complete the development and determine the limits of platelet and organ functionality using its technology. The goal is to extend the shelf life of platelets from five days, possible with currently available technology, to seven to nine days under refrigeration, and to 14 days under subzero conditions using a specially developed container.

"Moderately longer preservation times will allow blood centers and hospitals to recover 90% of lost revenues due to outdating,” said Harry Medusa, president of HyperBaric Systems. "This scientific breakthrough will solve a problem that has plagued society for centuries and will save the lives of millions of people around the world.”
