Test for Kidney Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 24 Mar 2004
A new beta-2 microglobulin test aids in the diagnosis of kidney disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

The test is a liquid, ready-to-use reagent that has minimal reaction to common interferences such as bilirubin, lipids, and hemoglobin. More...
Beta2M is a protein found on the surface of many cells, especially white blood cells. When kidney disease is suspected, beta2M helps identify where the kidney is damaged. Increased levels are found in patients with glomerular kidney disease, while decreased levels can appear in patients with tubular kidney disease. Beta2M levels are also monitored closely after a kidney transplant, since increased levels may be an early indication of tissue rejection.

Available on the Immage immunochemistry system of Beckman Coulter (Fullerton, CA, USA), the test provides a quantitative determination of B2M in human serum and plasma by rate nephelometry. The assay is designed to help commercial laboratories, hospitals, and clinics expand the chemistry panels on their Immage systems, allowing them to consolidate workstations and reduce their number of sent-out tests, thereby lowering costs. The test is manufactured by DakoCytomation (Glostrup, Denmark) but is distributed by Beckman Coulter.
