New Test Panel for Male Infertility

A new panel of two tests for male infertility is designed to indicate a sperm's ability to successfully achieve pregnancy and live birth.

Results suggesting low to poor fertility potential indicate that a couple has little or no chance of conceiving a child naturally or through assisted reproduction, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection. When conducted at the outset of infertility treatment, the tests could eliminate emotional trauma and financial costs leading a couple to pursue other options, such as sperm donation or adoption.

The test panel was developed by Repromedix (Woburn, MA, USA), which states that taken together, the two tests provide the clearest indication possible of whether or not a couple may conceive a child. Male infertility is a significant medical problem, with 40% of all infertility ascribed entirely or in part to male factors and an additional 20% unexplained. Data suggest that about 10-20% of the coupled screened will have abnormal results from either the SDD test, the SDFA test, or both, and are thus unlikely to benefit from expensive IVF procedures without treatment.
