Heparin Management Throughout Bypass Procedure

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 16 Jan 2001
A high-dose heparin management system automatically calculates the information required by doctors to recommend, monitor, and measure heparin dosage, effect, and reversal throughout a patient's cardiac bypass procedure. More...

Called Rapidpoint Accent, the new system is being launched by Bayer Diagnostics (Tarrytown, NY, USA). The system is designed to result in less blood loss, fewer complications, minimal risk to patient from exposure to blood products, and better overall outcomes. Rapidpoint Accent includes simple and easy-to-use test cards, including Bayer's currently available heparin management test and two new tests, the Heparin Titration Test and the Protamine Response Test. The heparin management panel and data processor were developed by PharmaNetics, Inc. (Raleigh, NC, USA).

In 1998, Bayer signed a worldwide distribution agreement with PharmaNetics to market Rapidpoint Coag, a multitest analyzer for monitoring anticoagulation therapy at the point of care. Test cards include Heparin Management, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Times Tests and tests for Prothrombin Time.

"Bayer's test menu for anticoagulation management is the broadest in the industry servicing the OR, ICU, CCU, catheterization lab, and Coumadin clinic,” noted Fran Tuttle, senior vice president and general manager, near patient testing, Bayer Diagnostics
