Glucose Meter Wins Design Award

A glucose meter that provides bi-directional communications between the meter and an insulin pump has won a 2004 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA), sponsored by Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry magazine. More...
MDEA winning entries excel in the areas of product innovation, design and engineering achievement, end-user benefit, and cost effectiveness in manufacturing and healthcare delivery.

The meter, called Paradigm Link, is the first untethered wireless system to offer bi-directional communications between a glucose meter and an insulin pump. By removing the guesswork in insulin dosing, the Paradigm Link makes it easier for diabetes patients to manage their condition, leading to improved health and extended life for many diabetics. Using radiofrequency (RF) signals, the Paradigm Link instantly communicates current glucose level data from the Paradigm Link glucose monitor to the Mini-Med insulin pump of Medtronic, Inc. (Redmond, WA, USA). Following that, the insulin pump adjusts insulin dosage to achieve the desired glucose level. The Paradigm Link portion of the system was developed by Nova Biomedical Corp. (Waltham, MA, USA) for its distribution partner, BD (Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA).
