Portable PCR Lab for Field Use

Researchers in the United Kingdom have developed a rapid, accurate mini-DNA laboratory appropriate for field use.

The portable laboratory uses PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technology and is designed to amplify DNA from pathogens such as anthrax and chlamydia, which may be used as biologic warfare agents. More...

While the British Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL, Porton Down, UK; www.dstl.gov.uk) developed the mini-lab for military use on a future battlefield, it has domestic applications as well. For example, it can be used to help farmers detect animal diseases, including foot and mouth disease or tuberculosis in cattle, in the field rather than taking samples back to a laboratory.
Dr. Tim Rubidge, head of technology transfer and investments at DSTL said, "This technology is not a twinkle in the eye of a research scientist looking far out into the future. We have a portfolio of more than 20 strong patents on PCR development, field-tested instruments, and continuing research projects supporting the Ministry of Defense and Department of Health. It is fair to say that we have taken PCR out of the research lab and into the field where it is most needed.”
