New Illumination Systems for Labs

A total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) illuminator called White Light is a new cost-effective alternative to traditional laser-based systems in laboratories.

The system is multispectral, which allows all light wavelengths to be available with standard microscopy fluorescent filters for the selection of the optimal excitation wavelengths for their specific applications. Because the system can utilize other lamp systems, rather than lasers, interference fringing associated with coherent illumination is not a problem.

Due to the proprietary design of the illumination path, White Light provides bright illumination with perfect chromatic correction. The system can quickly and easily switch between TIRF, a variable angle oblique, and standard epifluorescence illumination, making it a highly versatile tool for research imaging. The system was developed by Nikon Instruments, Inc. (Kawasaki, Japan).

Also new from Nikon is the Laser TIRF System II, which combines epifluorescence and TIRF on the same optical level. This design leaves the upper level of the TE2000 illumination path free for additional applications and makes it possible to switch between both modalities in milliseconds.
