Rapid diagnosis also improves the efficacy of treatment. Called BacLite, this rapid MRSA test is designed to help the UK government reach its stated target of a 50% reduction in MRSA levels by 2008.

The test was developed by Acolyte Biomedica (Porton Down, UK) and is based on new rapid technologoy developed by the Defense Science and Technology Laboratories, an agency of the UK Ministry of Defense. BacLite MRSA is an instrument-based system for rapid and cost-effective screening of the most prevalent hospital-acquired infection. The test is to be distributed in the United Kingdom by Bio-Stat Ltd. (Stockport, UK).
