Collaboration on Inflammatory Breast Cancer Biomarkers

A new collaboration is designed to further the understanding of biomarkers for inflammatory breast cancer in order to offer early disease detection and drug targets. More...


The Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation (ibcRF, LosAngeles, CA, USA) has selected SIDMAP (also in Los Angeles) to further expand its work on inflammatory breast cancer. Earlier, the foundation had worked with Dr. Laszlo Boros, associate professor of pediatrics at Harbor UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) Hospital and one of the founders of SIDMAP. SIDMAP is a service-based consulting and drug-testing company established by doctors with expertise in applying isotope tracer methodologies to acquire detailed understanding of diseases and drug effects at the nano-scale level.

SIDMAP's work will expand on Dr. Boros' earlier discoveries that uncovered evidence that inflammatory breast cancer cells produce substantial quantities of a metabolite--a product of cell nutrition--not produced by normal breast cells in measurable quantities.

"It may be that this substance can be detected in blood and urine samples of those with early-stage inflammatory breast cancer,” explained Dr. Boros.

There is currently no effective early detection test for inflammatory breast cancer, and it can be easily missed by mammography or ultrasound even beyond early stages, since it seldom presents as a lump. Early detection is also important because this cancer is among the most aggressive of human cancers. The new collaboration may result in an early test as well as new drugs to stop the growth of tumors.
