In a move to address the growing shortage of skilled professionals in clinical laboratories in China, four Chinese companies have partnered with Dade Behring (Deerfield, IL, USA) to create a scholarship fund to be distributed over a three-year period to Chinese students pursuing degrees in medical laboratory science.

The scholarships will be distributed each year in the form of scholarships worth around U.S.$30,000. More...
The first scholarships will be awarded in the fall semester of 2005. As administrators of the program, each respective university will evaluate applications, select recipients, and handle all managerial details. Scholarships will be awarded to students seeking laboratory technology degrees and will be based on innovation, academic performance, and relevant practice.

The partners of Dade Behring in this program are Shanghai Second Medical University, Sichuan University Huaxi Medical Institute, Tianjin Medical University, and Guangzhou Medical Institute. The program is the first such global program in the diagnostics industry.

"We want to make a real, practical difference for students, laboratories, physicians, and the patients they serve,” explained Etienne Szivo, China General Manager, Dade Behring. "In order to provide cost-effective, high-quality health care, we must meet the demand for trained clinical laboratory technicians.” Overall, Dade Behring has a $1.25 million commitment to continuing education worldwide.
