New Parasitology Tests

New parasitology diagnostics include tests for the detection of intestinal parasites, namely Giardia species, Cryptosporidium species, and Entamoeba histolytica.

Highly sensitive and specific, these tests are not dependent on the presence of live organisms but detect antigens produced by the parasites within the gut. The simple and convenient method can be completed within two hours.

Each assay in the range uses the same procedure and reagents, allowing several strips for different pathogens to be set up and run simultaneously. All incubations are at room temperature, and results can be read visually or spectrophotometrically.

In addition, Oxoid offers the Xpect range of rapid lateral flow tests for the direct detection of Cryptosporidium and Giardia from fecal specimens. With results in only 15 minutes, the speed, accuracy, and ease of use of the Xpect range allows even the smallest laboratory to offer parasitology testing and is ideal for fast testing in larger laboratories.

Giarda intestinalis is the most commonly detected protozoan parasite in the world, showing high prevalence in children under 10 years of age. Cryptosporidium parvum is another common protozoan parasite and a leading cause of infectious diarrhea, found in developed and less-developed countries. Entamoeba histolytica is a significant cause of disease worldwide and, together with E dispar, not only infects about 10% of the world's population but is also responsible for about 100,000 deaths each year. It can remain in the gut for as along as a year and can cause amoebic dysentery.
